WABDL Worlds Championship

I qualified for WABDL Worlds back in July at the Southwest Regional held in Plano, Texas on July 27th which I have still yet to blog about but eventually will. Worlds is my eighth meet to date since competing in my first meet back in April 2018 and training has not seemed to slow down yet.

At the beginning of 2019 I had planned out my training and the meets as to which I’d be competing in and WABDL was no where on my training/comp calendar. I decided I’d see what all the hype was with competing in a different federation that didn’t involve squats and that’s why I added another spring meet to my calendar in July. I figured I’d just use it as a training meet leading up to Olympia since the Southwest Regional was in the middle of my Olympia meet prep. I wasn’t expecting to qualify for Worlds come November.

Qualifying for WABDL Worlds in Plano, I was given the opportunity by my sponsor, Anderson Powerlifting to be able to travel to Las Vegas for the week to compete.

Weigh-Ins

I arrived the evening before weigh-ins which weren’t scheduled until 1:30 the following afternoon. I wasn’t worried about making weight as I’ve figured out over the last year or so how to prep correctly for a meet where I’m not having to cut weight but I hadn’t eaten since late afternoon before flying out to Vegas so by the time weigh-ins rolled around I was starving.

At weigh-ins they check your gear; bench shirts and deadlift suits were their main concerns but they check all the same equipment as they do in other federations except the one new thing that I found interesting and loved was that when you’re competing at the World level the bench shirt and deadlift suit you check in is stamped with a black light stamp. This is so that when you’re going for records as you’re coming off the platform they’ll shine a black light over your gear; if they don’t see the stamp they’ll know that you changed your gear from what was checked in which is cause for a DQ. Pretty cool an I weighed in at 112.8lbs.

Refuel

After weigh-ins, Ken took me over to Wahlburgers…amazing!!!! I had “The Our Burger” and the Smoked Bacon Macn’ Cheese. I love trying new places when I travel for a competition and this was definitely one that I’ll be coming back too on future trips to Vegas. There are so many great places to eat when in Vegas.

After refueling I went up to my room to rest and relax for an hour or so then headed back downstairs to help where needed at the Anderson booth and mingle with fellow lifters. I finally had the pleasure of meeting one of my Instagram followers that I’ve been following for almost a year now. Her name is Samantha and she’s a badass powerlifter and so sweet! We got a little time to talk about our training and the things around our training and competitions. Such a pleasure it was being able to finally meet such a sweet soul!

Samantha is a badass!

Meet Day : BENCH

Coach Kevin Pitman was my handler for the day. When doing out of state competitions it’s hard to depend on someone that’s not your usual training partner or coach but I’ve found throughout every meet that it’s a MUST HAVE to have someone other then yourself to be there to help. Kevin helped me set my bench shirt and gave the perfect handoffs on thee platform. His handoffs mimicked that exact handoff that my training partner gives me at the gym to the tee. Kevin called my numbers for me after each lift.

I went 2 for 3 on bench with my last attempt being a close miss as I just couldn’t get my left arm to lockout.

1st Attempt: 62.5kg/137.7lbs ⚪⚪⚪

2nd Attempt: 65kg/143.3lbs ⚪⚪⚪

3rd Attempt: 67.5kg/148.7lbs 🔴🔴🔴

DEADLIFT:

The lengths we equipped lifters go in order to get into our suits

Warming up in the back with Anderson teammate, Eva Dunbar and she noticed an issue with left hip and something I’ve never noticed in training where my left knee is too far forward when I grab the bar causing it to be over the top of my toes. She videoed me warming up with 135lbs to show me what it was that I was doing and coached me how to correct it. I carried that over to the platform. I had a little wider stance then what I’m used to but it worked. I will get out of the habit of repositioning my hips once I’ve grabbed the bar. Kevin handled me getting my suit straps up and my belt on as well as called all my numbers for me.

1st Attempt: 125kg/275.5lbs ⚪⚪⚪

2nd Attempt: 140kg/308.5lbs ⚪⚪⚪

3rd Attempt: 150.5kg/331lbs ⚪⚪⚪

4th Attempt: 155kg/341.5lbs 🔴🔴🔴

I went 3 for 3 on deadlifts and took a 4th attempt at 341.5lbs to break the national open record of 336lbs but missed it. I’ll get it next time.

Awards

I finished the meet with State, National, and World Records in Submaster for Deadlift and 3 Gold medals in bench for Open, Submasters and Best Lifter 52kg SPLY.

I didn’t hit the numbers I was intending to hit for this meet but I’m grateful that I’m able to compete in a sport that I’m passionate about and love . Thank you to Anderson Powerlifting and my husband for allowing me the opportunity to travel across the U.S. to compete at these big meets.

With the boss man himself, Ken Anderson of Anderson Powerlifting

Big shout out to Coach Kevin Pitman for being my handler, getting my bench shirt set to bench with perfect handoffs and for helping me get into my deadlift suit as well as for all the coaching and advice.

Big thanks to Eva Dunbar for helping me with my deadlift form during warm-ups and advice on how to improve. I’m looking forward to the next Worlds and I’m coming back with vengeance in 2020!

Huge shout out and thank you to my sponsor, Anderson Powerlifting for allowing me the opportunity to compete at Worlds in Vegas and always equipping me with the best gear for training and competition on and off of the platform.
